Wolf mortality in the period 2009 to 2010

In the two year period from 2009 to 1010, a total of 57 wolves perished. The majority of these were due to legal culling, with 24 individuals (6 in 2009 and 18 in 2010). Roads continued to have a major impact on the wolf population, with 20 individuals recorded to die on roads in this two-year period. Other factors were much less significant, and recorded cases were: 5 due to poaching, 2 due to rabies, and one case each of interventional culling, poisoning, disease, euthanasia, self-defence and one of unknown cause.

With regard to the sex structure of perished animals, 32 were males, 21 females and 4 of unknown sex. The highest mortality was recorded in the Dalmatia area, due primarily to roads.
