November/December 2012 – Meeting on implementation of the Snow Tracks monitoring campaign for large carnivores in 2012/2013
The last Snow Tracks campaign was held in winter 2009/2010. This year, the State Institute for Nature Protection, in cooperation with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb, is again organising lectures and meetings in order to stimulate and continue with data collection.

Genetic research of wolves
During 2011, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb, in cooperation with the Laboratorio di Genetica ISPRA in Italy conducted initial analyses of 150 tissue samples for 12 microsatellites for wolves from Croatia and Italy.
Monitoring wolf populations based on snow tracks
Monitoring of large carnivore populations based on snow tracks was carried out over a five-year period in counties where wolf is distributed and which have snow cover during winter.
W29-Ajša
On 24 August 2012, a female wolf named W29-Ajša, aged 5 months and weighing 14 kg, was captured in the territory of the Suho pack.
W28-Tona
On 18 July 2012, a female wolf named W28-Tona, aged 3.3 years, was captured and collared. She was monitored for two weeks before her signal was lost, and Slovenian researchers were also contacted for assistance in finding this wolf.
WP08-Wolf pup 08
In the territory of the Suho pack, a pup named WP08 (wolf pup 08) was captured and measured on 16 July 2012.
History of data collection
Though the project was officially completed on 1 December 2005, protection and research on the wolf continues.
W27-Šaki
On 31 October 2010, a wolf was rescued after falling into a well 4 m near the village of Pađene, near Knin.
W26-Karlo
On 1 September 2010, a male wolf was captured and collared in the territory of the Snježnik pack.
W25-Nika
The female wolf W25-Nika, aged 2.5 years, was collared on 21 August 2010 in the territory of the Suho pack.
Matan
On 29 July 2009, the staff of the OIKON Institute for Applied Ecology captured a wolf on Mt. Kozjak above Split and fitted it with a GPS collar.
W24-Ira
During August 2009, Dr. Josip Kusak, assistant professor from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, conducted activities to capture and collar wolves from the Krasno pack on Mt. Velebit in cooperation with Northern Velebit National Park and Velebit Nature Park.
W23-Taša
On 24 August 2009, a female wolf named W23-Taša, aged 1.5 years and weighing 29 kg, was captured in the Gumanec area of Gorski Kotar and fitted with a GPS-GSM collar.
W22-Drago
On 28 May 2009, a male wolf was captured at Bukovi vrh in Gorski Kotar, just three kilometres from the site of capture of wolf W21-Luka.
