W19-Rina

On 29 October 2007, a young female W19-Rina, aged 2.5 years and weighing 25 kg, was captured near Crni Lug in Gorski Kotar, in the territory of the Risnjak pack. She was fitted with a GPS-UHF-VHF collar, and during the initial monitoring phase, she remained in the known territory of the Risnjak pack. This was also the first wolf from this pack to wear a GPS emitter, which provided much more information on the life of the pack than possible from a classic VHF radio-collar. Rina later remained in the known territory of the Risnjak pack, though with an increase in the territory, mostly in the area between the old road and the motorway. The territory of the Risnjak pack, obtained by monitoring Rina over a period of 401 days, was 318.9 km2, which was larger than previously established by monitoring the wolf Tanja, thanks likely to the use of the GPS collar. On 19 September 2008, Rina was recaptured as her battery had ceased to operate in April 2009. She was refitted with a new GPS-UHF-VHF collar, thus ensuring the continued monitoring both of this wolf and the entire pack.
