A Wolf Killed
On Monday, 12 March, a two-days-old wolf carcass was found near Kistanje. It is a comparatively small female with several wounds on her body and it is therefore suspected to have been shot. The scene of the accident was investigated by Mr. Marko Ljubičić, a court appointed expert of the Ministry of Culture, and policemen. The carcass is presently in the freezer of the Knin Veterinary Station, but will be soon brought to the School of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb.

A She-wolf Killed in an Accident
On Wednesday, 28 February 2007, a 4/5-years-old she-wolf got killed in an accident on the D1 trunk road near the Aledići hamlet not far from Hrvace (the area of Klačine). The information about the road-kill reached Mr. Stipe Kokić, the court appointed expert of the Ministry of Culture, several days after the accident only. When collected, the carcass was therefore already in a state of decomposition. The carcass is presently in a freezer of the Split Veterinary Institute where it will be fetched by the scientists of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb. The circumstances suggest that the she-wolf fell victim to a highway collision, but the precise data will only be known after the analysis to be performed at the School of Veterinary Medicine.

4 Livestock Guardian Dog Pups Donated
On Friday, 2 February 2007, four livestock guardian dog pups were donated in the premises of the Knin Veterinary Station. The beneficiaries of the donations were livestock breeders from Obrovac Sinjski, Strmica, Unešić and Kistanje. This is the first donation in the area of Dalmatia after the official completion of the project "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia".

4 Electric Fences Donated
On Thursday, 1 February 2007, four electric fences were donated in the regional office for Gorski kotar and Lika to livestock breeders from Udbina, Klanac, Trnovačko Novoselo and Smiljansko Polje. The interest shown in donations of this kind after the official completion of the project "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia" points to a high efficiency of electric fences in the field in terms of protecting the livestock against predators' attacks. Besides, such donations encourage the livestock breeders to invest by themselves in this form of livestock protection through purchase of additional electric wires and extension of the existing security measures.

A Wolf Killed in an Accident
On Wednesday, 27 December, at 17.35 p.m. a wolf fell victim to a highway collision on the D1 trunk road between Jošani and Bjelopolje near Korenica. The scene of the accident was investigated by the police and Mr. Igor Hak, a court appointed expert from the Ministry of Culture in charge of assessment of damage caused by strictly protected wild taxa. It was found that the wolf was running across the road from the east in a westward direction when it was hit by a bus and killed instantly. On 30 December the carcass was brought to the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb for further analyses. The wolf killed was a 2.5-years-old male.

On 23 December 2006 four livestock guardian dog pups were donated in the Gospić regional office for Gorski kotar and Lika. The beneficiaries of the donations were livestock breeders from Jezerane, Donje Pazarište, Udbina and Severin na Kupi. Despite the completion of the project "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Crotia" the livestock breeders keep showing interest in donations of this kind, which points to a high efficiency of dogs in the field in terms of protecting the livestock against wolf predation.

The Second Legal Wolf Kill in Gorski kotar

In the night between the 12 and 13 November a hunter of the "Tetrijeb" Hunters Club from Čabar killed a wolf by hunting from a raised hide in the area of the Crna gora hunting ground. By having killed a young she-wolf from a this year's litter of the telemetrically monitored "Snježnik" pack the legal wolf kill in Gorski kotar allowed in 2006 was concluded, which was duly made known by the secretary of the hunters' association of the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar to all the hunters clubs in the County area. The experts from the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb took the carcass, found it to weigh 23 kg and transported it to the School for further analyses.

On 5 November at 7.30 in the morning a master of the hunt from the Vrbovsko forestry office notified the expert for the assessment of damage caused to livestock by strictly protected animal species in the area of the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar about having performed the first legal wolf kill since 1995 when the wolf was declared protected by law.

Preparations for Snow Tracking of Large Carnivore Populations
The representatives of hunters' associations and protected areas met in Gospić on 18 October and in Crni Lug (Risnjak National park) on 25 October to discuss the organization of the action of snow tracking the large carnivore populations. At two well attended meetings the participants were made familiar with the methodology of work and the operational implementation of the action was agreed.

The Second Suho Pack Cub Collared
Another this year's pup, a 7-months-old male weighing the incredible 27 kg, was caught on 30 October in the Kiršina draga in Gorski kotar. The cub named Grga after the main hero of the picture book "The Story of Grga the Wolf-cub" written by Sanja Pilić was a brother of Noah from the same litter and belonged to the Suho pack. Grga was fitted with a GPS-GSM-VHF collar intended to operate for two full years, and was captured and collared in the presence of game-keepers from the Suho hunting lodge and a few local hunters - wolf lovers who gave him the name.

A Wolf Killed in Highway Collision
On Tuesday, 24 October, at 6.15 a.m. a wolf got killed in a highway collision on the local road near Čista Velika in Dalmatinska zagora. It was a young female from this year's litter, weighing some 18 kg. The carcass was put into a freezer of the Veterinary Institute in Split, where it will be fetched by experts of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb for further analyses.

Meeting with the Government of the County of Primorje and Gorski Kotar on Establishment of an Education and Information Centre for Large Carnivores in Gorski Kota
The Wolf Management Plan as the basic document governing the long-term conservation of wolves in Croatia also lays down guidelines on the development of ecologically acceptable tourism based on the promotion of large carnivores. European Commission declaring the LIFE III project "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia" the LIFE project of July 2006
This month the European Commission declared the LIFE III project "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia" the LIFE project of the month.
On its website the Commission points out that one of the main tasks of the LIFE-Third Countries programme is to strengthen administrative capacity of neighbouring countries (especially those negotiating to join the European Union) so that they can carry out environment and nature management tasks.
The Croatian wolf conservation project that dealt with capacity building in respect of the wolf as an important part of Croatia's biodiversity was executed in line with EU standards and policy.

Lecture "WHO'S AFRAID OF THE BIG, BAD WOLF?"
On Monday, 20 February 2006, a lecture entitled "Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?" was held in the premises of the Profil Megastore bookshop in Bogovićeva 7, Zagreb. The lecture was given by Ms. Ana Štrbenac, B.Sc.Eng., the head of the project on "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia" and by Dr. Josip Kusak, a researcher at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb. A female wolf killed
On the local road between Trilj and Imotski close to the village of Turjaci a female wolf fell victim to a collision with a vehicle early in the morning. It was estimated to be aged between 2 and 3 years and to weigh about 30 kg. Additional details will be known after dissection at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb.

A male wolf killed
In the morning of the Christmas Eve the inhabitants of the municipality of Trilj reported to Stipe Kokić, the officially appointed expert for wolf caused damage assessment, on having found a dead wolf. During the inspection the dead wolf was found to be a male aged between 2 and 3 years and bearing noticeable bite wounds all over the body. The carcass was transferred to the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb for a dissection and determination of the actual cause of death.

A young wolf killed in a highway collision
In the morning of 16 November 2005 a wolf was killed by a vehicle close to the Vršek tunnel and the Zalesina viaduct at the eastern entry to Rijeka. The body was collected by Tomislav Šporer and fetched by Josip Kusak on 18 November 2005, transported to Zagreb and dissected on the same day. It was a young male aged 1.8 and weighing 30 kg. Attempt to Rescue a Wolf named Mane from Mazin
In the morning of 1 September the inhabitants of the Mazin village close to Donji Lapac informed the representatives of competent authorities that a wounded wolf had been found in the meadow next to houses. The first information suggested that the wounds resulted from a highway collision. Eva - end of the story
Less than six months after the she-wolf Eva had been caught in a trap near Runovići, not far from Imotski, her repeated coming closer to settlements and humans ended fatally. On 3 August 2005 , at 3:30 in the morning, she was shot near Posušje in Herzegovina . The young she-wolf recovered completely from injuries suffered from a steel rope. She had even put on some weight, which unfortunately could not be determined, because the hunter had cut off her head and kept it is a trophy. However, her collar and the rest of the carcass were preserved and thus enabled an insight into her former life. More details >>

The Open House
In the region of Lika and Gorski kotar The Open House was held, an educational and information exhibition presenting plans for the management of wolves, lynx and brown bears. The she-wolf named Eva is alive and active. Josip Kusak spent two days (18-19 May) in the field close to Runovići and received a signal. The she-wolf moves within the radius of 70 to 80 km and trespasses on the territory of the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina. Eva's pack "satisfied" its hunger at the rescuer, Adam Baković, who despite this fact did not complain, because aware of the fact that wolves must eat to survive. The damage was inspected by Damir Bosiljevac, a court appointed expert for assessment of damage to domestic animals caused by predators. An the basis of the report the competent ministry will pay compensation to Adam Baković for the sheep killed.

Donation of tornjak puppies to the livestock breeders in Dalmatinska zagora
In Knin, on 5 May 2005 , ten tornjak puppies were donated to the livestock breeders from Gljev, Gornji Vinjani, Nunić, Radučić, Ričice and Rupe. The event took place in Knin's city hall. Donation of tornjak puppies
Since 2003 altogether 70 tornjak puppies were donated to the livestock breeders in Gorski kotar, Lika and Dalmacija; 60 in the scope of the LIFE project, 5 as a special donation of the State Institute for Nature Protection and 5 with the financial support of the Zadar County. Primorje - Gorski kotar County has also joined this programme and allocated certain funds from its budget for donation of tornjak dogs and electrical fences to the livestock breeders from this County, as a measure for the protection of livestock from large predators. Eva visited Bosnia and Hezegovina
On Friday 18 March 2005, Josip Kusak visited Runović village in order to have more information about Eva. Few minutes after 8 a.m. he received the first signal from Eva, near the place named Krivodol, on the edge of Imotsko polje. After that, he knew that Eva was alive and active. A week after the surgical treatment and release in the wild the female named Eva W11 is alive and active. These are the first results received from her GPS collar on 6 March 2005. Despite serious injuries Eva found strenght to move and so came down to the adjacent Imotsko polje for a while, but spent the rest of the time on the slopes of the Osoja Mountain above the place named Runović. The she-wolf named Eva saved from the poachers' trap
On Wednesday, 23 February 2005, not far from the Runović village, in the Sebišine hamlet near Imotski, Adam Baković found a she-wolf entangled in a trap set for wild boars. A steel noose was tightened around her waist and while the animal was trying to free itself, the steel rope kept cutting deeper and deeper into its body causing severe injuries. More details >>

Mila, a satellite monitored she-wolf, probably killed in Gorski kotar
In September 2004 a she-wolf named Mila was captured in the area above Tršće und radio-collared for the purpose of satellite monitoring. This was the first wolf of Gorski kotar whose movements were monitored by means of a satellite. During their visit to Croatia the European Commission representatives expressed their satisfaction with the fact that it was precisely within the framework of the LIFE project that such a monitoring of wolves' activities had been made possible. Adoption of the Wolf and Lynx Management Plans
Ministry of Culture officially adopted the Wolf and Lynx Management Plans.
These Plans represent guidelines for management of wolf and lynx population in Croatia in order to ensure their long-term conservation and their living as far as possible in harmony with humans. Each Management Plan is an active document, that will be revised every two years. It will also result with amending of existing legislation covering nature conservation, hunting and other sectors related to the wolf and lynx population in Croatia.

Soon after the female wolf Mila Dr. Josip Kusak succeeded in collaring the sixth wolf - a reproductive (alpha) female wolf of the "Risnjak" pack named Tanja, 5-6 years old and weighing 28 kg. The "Risnjak" pack spends most of the time in the area between Crni Lug, Delnice and Lokve, but keeps coming also to the other side of the Risnjak Mountain - up to the Lazac meadow, Vilje, Suha Rečina and Gornje Jelenje, covering an area of 150 km 2 .

The meeting and project presentation in the County Splitsko-dalmatinska
A meeting and a presentation of the LIFE project on "Conservation and Management of Wolves in Croatia " were held in the premises of the Public Institution for Protected Area Management of the County Splitsko-dalmatinska. The meeting in question was attended by Mr. Ivan Gabelica, the Public Institution Manager and his associates, and by the LIFE Project Manager Ms. Ana Štrbenac and her associates - Ms. Jasna Martinko, Mr. Nikica Skroza, Mr. Damir Bosiljevac and Mr. Boris Šabić as chartered experts in predator damage assessment. On that occasion all project activities and results achieved by donations of pen guardians and electric fences were presented in detail. Viewing the needs of livestock breeders in this county that exceed by far the donation funds provided for, the county was required to get involved in the activities mentioned by its own contribution.

Participants of the workshops agreed on the Draft of the Wolf Management Plan
On the last workshop on the development of the Wolf Management Plan, held in
Baške Oštarije in June 2004, the participants agreed on the Draft of the Wolf
Management Plan. Altogether six workshops on development of the Plan were held
within the project from the beginning of 2003, with the three workshops held
before the project. Representatives of all interest groups participated in these
