Mila, a satellite monitored she-wolf, probably killed in Gorski kotar

In September 2004 a she-wolf named Mila was captured in the area above Tršće und radio-collared for the purpose of satellite monitoring. This was the first wolf of Gorski kotar whose movements were monitored by means of a satellite.

During their visit to Croatia the European Commission representatives expressed their satisfaction with the fact that it was precisely within the framework of the LIFE project that such a monitoring of wolves' activities had been made possible.

Mila was markedly active in her search for a partner, entering the area of the adjacent Slovenia and thus showing that nature knows no bounds.

In the middle of December 2004 the last signal was received from Mila, located at Kupički vrh not far from the borders of the Risnjak National Park, which is an area managed by the "Tetrijeb Gerovo" Hunter's Club.

In the last three years it was, namely, here that a lynx was shot (for which a hunter from Gerovo was sentenced) and so was a she-wolf named Blaža (the person liable is unknown). It was also here that the last signal of a radio-collared lynx female was received in 2002 (the destiny of this lynx remained unknown). These are the only information available. Talking unofficially with individual hunters we found out that Mila had been killed and the collar badly damaged and hung on the tree in an unknown place.

The State Institute for Nature Protection informed correspondingly the competent authorities: the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, the County Primorsko-goranska , the Hunters' Club of the respective county and the police department. The matter is currently under investigation, but no information has been received so far. What is more, local hunters' clubs said that the news about Mila's disappearance had been communicated to them by the State Institute for Nature Protection, although this information was provided by associates involved in hunting in this area.

Viewing the fact that the Plan for Wolf Management in Croatia, already adopted, was prepared under active participation of the representatives of hunters who are, among other things, obliged to combat illegal hunting, we regret very much that they have still not reached the level of awareness that would make them co-operate in combating these illegal activities. All the more as these are individuals who are as a rule usually involved in wildlife poaching. The hunters, who know best the situation in the field and whose co-operation is of paramount importance for the conservation of wildlife, are expected to prove on this example that nature conservation is their commitment and the orientation to be striven for by the hunting sector. Anyway, this is the obligation of each citizen of this country and, besides, this case will be notified to the European Commission.
