The First Legal Wolf Kill in Gorski kotar On 5 November at 7.30 in the morning a master of the hunt from the Vrbovsko forestry office notified the expert for the assessment of damage caused to livestock by strictly protected animal species in the area of the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar about having performed the first legal wolf kill since 1995 when the wolf was declared protected by law. Namely, the Ruling of the Ministry of Culture dated 14 September 2006 allows elimination of a total of 7 wolf individuals from the population - 2 in Gorski kotar, 2 in Lika and 3 in Dalmatia (2 in the County of Šibenik-Knin and 1 in the Biokovo area of the County of Split-Dalmatia). The purpose of such an intervention is to resolve the key problems of the wolf protection, i.e. to reduce damage caused to livestock and mitigate the public animosity towards the wolf that results in the illegal kill. The kill may be performed solely by an individual hunt in a precisely determined area and in the period between 1 October and 31 December 2006. The above master of the hunt killed the wolf by hunting from a raised hide with bait in the forest area of Gluha draga inside the "Bjelolasica" state-owned hunting ground at 19.20 p.m. on 4 November 2006. It was a young, this year's male pup weighing some 17 kg.
