A Wolf-cub Collared in Gorski Kotar
On 28 September 2006 a this year's male wolf-cub weighing 18 kg was captured in the Ričica valley 1 km far from the Suho hunting lodge (the Smrekova draga - Gumance hunting ground). It was fitted with a GPS collar and released at the same place. The wolf-cub was named Noah and the pack that it belonged to the "Suho2 pack". On that day other pack members moved around the same valley, because immediately after having released Noah into the wild another wolf was seen and the group howling was heard in the Ričica valley. Next day the pack left - no signal from the collar was tracked in the valley.
The collaring of the first wolf of the Suho pack, previously known as the Platak or the borderland pack, whose members were only monitored by traces and excrements, is a great step forward in studying wolves of Gorski Kotar. The monitoring of this pack would complete the picture of the movement, areal distribution and number of wolves in the northern part of Gorski kotar. |
