Workshop on "The Preparation of the Plan for Wolf Management in Croatia"

Baške Oštarije, 13-14 October 2003

The workshop on "The Preparation of the Plan for Wolf Management in Croatia" held in Baške Oštarije was attended by about 40 representatives of all interest groups (non-governmental organizations, representatives of competent ministries, hunting associations, protected areas, experts, etc.), including the representatives from Slovenia.

The workshop started with the presentation of the work version of The Plan for Wolf Management in Croatia containing all the data collected and co-ordinated with previous workshops.

The workshop continued with the discussion about two options:

a complete protection (as presently) and protection with the possibility of intervention, and resulted in a proposal for a method of implementing a protection model that includes a possibility of an exceptional intervention in the population.

Given the diversity of viewpoints and opinions about the wolf protection problem area, representatives of various interest groups showed readiness and maturity enough to co-operate in planning the method of wolf population management in Croatia, aiming at its conservation in the long run.

It was agreed that at the next workshop all details related to another option (complete protection) would be elaborated.

Since the participants agreed to make every effort toward preparation of the Draft Management Plan by the end of the year, the following workshop is scheduled for the beginning of December.
